Annie@SHVC: Hi Sara and Paul, where do you come from and how long have you been in Shanghai?
Sara&Paul : We have been in Shanghai together for five years and are from Connecticut and New York, USA.

Annie@SHVC: So are you a vegetarian or vegan?
Sara&Paul: I do love my vegetables and eat lots of them, but will eat meat and fish. Paul is a vegetarian and has been eating this healthy lifestyle for over 10 years.

Annie@SHVC:Last year you opened China’s first organic vegan bakery, what drove you to give this a try?
Sara&Paul: Last year we opened China’s first organic and vegan bakery and ice creamery, The Freshary. We felt that there was a need for healthy, fresh, and organic foods. We sorely miss great tasting baked goods without all the preservatives and additives. In Shanghai, food scandals and safety are a big concern. Our baked goods and ice cream were fresh, healthy, organic, yummy and safe to eat.

Annie@SHVC: I totally agree… but I was so sad to see it go, I miss your green tea soy ice-cream so bad!!! Though I believe as more and more people are aware of the benefits of vegan food, the demand will gradually grow. On a better note, I bet you’re very happy spending more time with your son now, how is he doing? Are you going to raise him as a vegetarian? ;-)
Sara&Paul: David is 10 months now and loves his pumpkin and carrots. Paul and I still have some differences of opinions whether to raise him as a vegetarian (smile), but for the time being we decided to feed him some meat to provide a balanced diet with sufficient protein and limited potential food allergies.

Annie@SHVC: Yeah I understand…perhaps when he is older, you can try to explain to him and let him choose himself. Do you find it difficult to find quality baby food in Shanghai? What do you usually give to David and what is his favorite?
Sara&Paul: It is extremely difficult to find good quality and reasonably priced baby food in Shanghai. So we make it ourselves at home. I usually steam a mixture of vegetables together and add some beans or meat for some meals and mash it all together. These days, he has the most fun feeding himself.

Annie@SHVC:What a great boy! I would love to see him again… bet he has grown! Last but not last least, what is your fav vegan dish or restaurant in Shanghai?
Sara&Paul: We enjoy and are regulars at Kush, the vegetarian restaurant on Yanping Lu. I love their lentil burgers and Paul is a fan of their arabian wrap and seaweed salad.

    Annie@SHVC: Sara、Paul
    Sara&Paul :

    Annie@SHVC:

    Annie@SHVC:

    Annie@SHVC:

    Sara&Paul:

    Annie@SHVC:
