Vegan means only plant-based ingredients, completely no animal-derived ingredients
Cruelty-Free means no animal testing
Animal testing are done by companies formulating with chemicals (usually called to replace more expensive natural ingredients) to identify the level of toxicity of a particular compound. Research shows that oftentimes what is poison for animals is not necessarily poison for people and vice versa, therefore it’s not even too practical!Have you heard that dogs can’t eat chocolate? Human beings certainly can, and vegans certainly enjoy dark chocolate!(and yes, dark chocolate is VEGAN)

What about animal-derived ingredients? If one can get all that is needed for the beautiful skin from plants, why use animal-derived products? Not to mention, some of them can be quite occlusive or irritating, with sensitive individuals developing dermatitis (for example, lanolin).
Often, the name of the ingredient doesn’t suggest animal origin, so here is the condensed list of the most widely used animal-derived ingredients:
carmine (crushed bugs in red and deep pink lipsticks, eye shadows and other color cosmetics)
hyaluronic acid (from beef in anti-aging serums)
silk products (from bugs in creams and hair conditioners)
tallow (animal fat in soaps)
lanolin (from sheep wool)
musk (from deer glands in perfumery)
ambergris (from whales in perfumery)
egg lecithin, whites, powder
milk products (usually come from factory farmed animals treated with hormones and kept continuously pregnant to produce milk)
bee products (honey, pollen, beeswax, etc.)
placenta
collagen (from beef and pork)
pearl powder
emu oil
Some of them may seem fairly innocent, for example milk, as they are not associated with animal slaughter. But there can be a heartbreaking underlying story of animal abuse, unethical practices and factory farming (which is also one of the most environmentally destructive industries today).
